Nothing fills my cup quite like hitting the trails with a leash in one hand and a coffee in the other. If you’re looking for some fresh air, a little dirt under your boots, and that telltale happy tail wagging next to you, you’re in luck. Central Virginia—especially around North Garden and the Blue Ridge foothills—has no shortage of dog-friendly trails to explore.

These are five of my absolute favorites—picked with pups in mind.

1. Saunders-Monticello Trail

Located conveniently in Charlottesville, Kemper Park within the Saunders-Monticello Trail system provides excellent dog-friendly hiking experiences.

Take in the lovely views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the tranquil two-acre pond as you walk or bike. For those seeking a bit more challenge, a network of rustic trails diverges from the paved path, leading you and your canine companion into the heart of the woods. These unpaved options feature steeper inclines and more rugged terrain, perfect for a more engaging hike amidst beautiful natural surroundings. Kemper Park truly caters to both leisurely walks and more adventurous explorations with your four-legged friend. Note that not all of the Saunders-Monticello trail is accessible for dogs.

2. Walnut Creek Park

For dog owners near North Garden seeking reliable hiking options throughout the year, Walnut Creek Park is a fantastic choice. With fifteen miles of trails winding through the park, you and your furry friend can enjoy countless adventures. These trails aren’t just for hiking; they’re also great for mountain biking and running. Importantly, Walnut Creek Park remains a wonderful option even when winter weather affects access to scenic drives like Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway, ensuring you always have a local spot to enjoy the outdoors with your dog.

3. Biscuit Run Park

Just a short drive from North Garden, Biscuit Run Park, Albemarle County’s newest and largest park (opened December 14th, 2024), offers a fresh and exciting hiking experience for you and your dog. Getting there is easy via Route 20 (2020 Scottsville Road), where you’ll find a well-equipped eastern entrance with a trailhead, 75 parking spots, and restrooms. From this convenient access point, you can step onto 8.5 miles of clearly marked and well-maintained trails, perfect for enjoyable walks and hikes with your leashed canine companion.

5. Totier Creek Park

For a change of pace and a scenic drive south towards Scottsville, consider the Totier Creek Park. This local gem offers a charming 3-mile network of trails that loop through the woods surrounding the picturesque Totier Creek Reservoir. Enjoy a relatively easy hike with your leashed dog along trails like the James River Loop, keeping an eye out for the diverse wildlife that frequents the area, including waterfowl on the lake and various bird species. While swimming isn’t permitted for humans or pets in the reservoir, the tranquil water views and peaceful wooded paths make Totier Creek Park a lovely spot for a more relaxed dog-walking adventure near North Garden.

Before You Hit the Trail…

Make sure you and your pup are fully prepped for a safe and happy outing. I put together a free Trail Ready Pup Checklist to help you pack like a pro—because the only thing worse than forgetting poop bags is realizing you left the treats at home.
